Giving, It's what Christians do
Reading and Commenting Through the Book of Acts
Read Acts 11
In the first century, many Christians found themselves in need of food because of famine and some where in need of shelter and safety caused by persecution. Some of us are shocked to learn both of these situations still exist in the 21st century.
Human need has created the Christian ministry of giving. Followers of Jesus are not merely "called" to be givers; they are the product of a giving God. Giving is what authentic Christianity is all about because it is a reflection of God himself.
There are many characteristics of authentic Christianity but none so obvious as the heart and practice of giving.
While reviewing one of my former staff member's statement of faith, I read the following words: "Christians don't buy everything they can afford." This struck me. It was counter-cultural to the American life-style where not only do we tend to acquire what we can afford; we purchase what we cannot.
When we live like this, we rob God, believers in need, humanity in general, and even ourselves from the joy of giving and the opportunities to reflect the persona of our Creator.
While it is not evil for one to be wealthy, nor does every believer possess the same convictions, each is called to listen and respond to our God-given spirit of generosity.
Remember, giving is what we do because the greatest giver of all resides within.
There is a name in the history of humanity that will never be forgotten because of his love for money and power. He was a disciple of Jesus. He was a contradiction. His name was Judas.
Reflection Questions:
Why do you think the subject of money is such a sensitive issue?
What do you think about the statement, "Christians don't buy everything they can afford?"
After reading this devotion are you convicted, inspired, angry, depressed, motivated, or...?
