Coaching Tip #1: How to Set Great Goals

Set goals that will transform your inner person!

The other day I was sitting at my desk evaluating the progress I had made on my goals for the year. During this process I measure results and consider adjusting goals up or down based upon what I have accomplished or learned to that point. After pondering a bit, I pushed the task aside and opened my Bible.

As I opened the ancient book, I went to where I left off the day before, Acts 11. As I came across verse 24, I was struck by a statement made about a disciple of Jesus, named Barnabas: “He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.”

This phrase really grabbed me. Remember, I was just thinking and working on goals. It dawned on me that of all my worthy goals for the year (family goals, ministry goals, financial goals, health goals), I did not have any goals pertaining to cultivating my own soul – the kind of person I want to be.

I started to ask myself, “Am I a good man?” I think it’s a good question to ask. “Am I a man in touch with God’s leading?” This question deals with the ability to discern between Jim thoughts and God thoughts. “Am I full of faith?” and “What kind of person do I want to be?”

I don’t think I should just assume I will continue on the path of Christ. Life has too many events – good and bad – that can bump us off course. I think I better consider establishing some soul goals for the remainder of the year. Yep, that’s what I’m going to do.

Regarding Goal Setting

I am one who sets goals. I do this because I believe goals provide direction and even motivation. But, the most important part of goal setting is choosing the best goals. While some folks choose to live frantic and reactionary lives, I believe we should consider living purposeful lives. Both life-styles are busy but one has a better opportunity to be productive than the other.

Having too many goals can be overwhelming and unrealistic. Well meaning people get the goal-setting bug and then get smashed by reality. My suggestion is to set one meaningful goal. Then, after you gain experience and success, you will be able to write several goals based upon a clear vision.

A goal is about accomplishing a broader vision. Here’s an example: “My vision is to have a joy-filled marriage.” If the vision is to have a good marriage, you will need to establish some goals that will help make that vision a reality. You might decide to pray together, date weekly, and attend an annual marriage conference. These might be your goals for the year in regard to your relationship.
